Welcome to the Great Sand Dunes National Park Events Guide.
Here you will find information about the park's ranger-led educational programs, activities for children, and special guided tours for visitors.

Scheduled interpretive programs are offered most days from late May - September, and are designed to help you understand more about your park. Programs are also offered October - April on a limited basis, or by request for groups. Call the Visitor Center at 719-378-6399 for more information.

K-12 Education Programs are available throughout the year, by reservation only. Hands-on discovery in the dunes, forest, or wetlands are available seasonally, and classroom visits are available in winter months.

Junior Ranger Day will take place once every Spring. Family-oriented, kid-friendly programs typically include a craft / activity table, interactive touch table, scavenger hunt, and other activities.

A variety of workshops on the Nature Conservancy's Medano-Zapata Ranch, within the national park, are available spring through fall. The Nature Conservancy partners with the National Park Service to protect the entire dunes system and its biodiversity.

Bison Tour and Hayride is offered in summer months on Nature Conservancy-owned lands within national park boundaries. See some of the herd of over 1000 bison that roam the grasslands and wetlands west of the Great Sand Dunes. Led by the managers of the herd, this hayride will take you to parts of the park that few visitors get to see, including wetlands. For more information on dates, times, and prices, please call the bison managers 719-378-2904.

Castles, Kites, and Concert is an annual event for all ages. Sponsored by Friends of the Dunes, it features a sand-sculpture contest beside Medano Creek (if there is water in the creek), and kite-flying contest. A free concert at the Amphitheater finishes the day.

Summer Concert Series These free concerts are usually offered at 7:00 at the amphitheater on selected Sunday evenings in summer. Concerts represent a variety of local musical groups and styles, and are sponsored by Friends of the Dunes.

Special Guest Speakers are scheduled each summer at the amphitheater.

Medano Pass Primitive Road Tours in an open-air vehicle are offered in warmer months by the Oasis store, near the main entrance of the park. The tours start at the store, following a sandy road along the eastern edge of the dunes. Adults $21, $12 for children 12-18, $5 for children under 12. Tours take place at 10:00 and 2:00 in summer months or in shoulder seasons as long as there is a minimum of 6 people. Call 719-378-2222 for reservations and information.
